Potsdam – the once imposing residence on the outskirts of Berlin ,has today become a modern state capital, a university city, a place of scientific research, a city of castles, gardens and parks, a place renown for sport and film and much much more… Countless past & present celebrities have shaped the joie de vivre of this city of over 1000 years old. Among others stars includes countless Prussian Kings, Peter-Joseph Lenné, Marlene Dietrich, Curd Jürgens, Albert Schweizer, the TV presenter Günther Jauch and the entrepreneurs, Wolfgang Joop and Hasso Plattner.
Uniquely located upon the banks of the Templiner Lake on the Havel Island that was named after the Potsdam manufacturer Hermann Hoffbauer, the INSELHOTEL built in 1996 and extended in 2004 and 2009, offers comfort for vacationers and seminar and conference guests 365 days of the year. It is also a prestigious venue for company events and family parties.
During the so-called “crisis-year” of 2009, we managed an extension to our exclusive Lake Restaurant with its large open log-fire and the roofed lake terrace. We also created a separate room which was christened the ‘Water Lily Room’. The construction of a private hotel yacht harbour situated directly on the Hinterkappe part of Templiner Lake was also completed in this year.
Clara and Hermann Hoffbauer were carpet manufacturers. Their marriage remained childless and so they had plenty of time to travel about the world. On one of their journeys to Africa they both became very sick. Their greatest wish was to be able to return to Germany in good health. Their wish came true and from that point on they both devoted themselves to charitable endeavours. They founded the Hoffbauer Foundation.
At the time of its foundation in 1901, this was one of the largest emerging protestant charitable foundations of private initiative in Germany. This can be attested by the testamentary decree of the Potsdam entrepreneur Hermann Hoffbau. After his death his wife Clara realized the ideas of the Foundation.
On 30.06.1901 the Foundation turned its hand to the fate of orphaned and semi-orphaned girls from good middle-class families with the intention of offering support in their education and upbringing. The Foundation then obtained the rights of an Independent Parish Community.
Until this very day a church-run social care mother house still exists. Only very few deaconries can sustain their commitment like this today.
Today, the Foundation maintains its educational institutions; among others these include a Protestant secondary school with boarding school facilities, as well as organisations for the fulfillment of diaconal tasks for the welfare of the elderly, the disabled and the young. The Foundation is an ecclesiastical trust and takes part in diocesan work.

With the retreat of the Red Army in Germany, the most beautiful part of Hermannswerder Island became free again (it had been used as a Soviet military hospital up until early 1945), and was hence returned to the use of the original owner the Hoffbauer Foundation.
Burkhard Scholz purchased the plot of land on which the INSELHOTEL now stands from the Hoffbauer Foundation and in doing so he made his dream of a four star hotel located directly on the banks of the Templiner Lake come true. The foundations were laid on 3rd March1995, the roofing ceremony followed on 21st June 1995 and on 10th May 1996 the official opening of the INSELHOTEL. Since then, guests come here time and time again from all over Germany and the world to enjoy the comfort of the Hotel and the sights and beauty of Potsdam.
In the summer of 2004 an extension could be made to the INSELHOTEL with the opening of the Seminar and Banquet Centre “Bellevue,” which has provided even better and more improved possibilities for hosting seminars and celebrations.
In summer 2009 we extended the Lake Restaurant with a newly designed and roofed lake terrace. In addition, a separate venue named the ‘Water Lily Room’ came into existence providing a venue for private gatherings of up to 15 people.
