Potsdam – once the impressive royal residence at the gates of Berlin, has now become a modern capital, university and science city, a city of castles, gardens and parks, sports and film and much more... numerous celebrities of days gone by have left their mark but also contemporary personalities still mark the lifestyle of this over 1000-year-old city. Amongst them are for example several Kings of Prussia, Peter-Joseph Lenné, Marlene Dietrich, Curd Jürgens, Albert Schweizer as well as the TV presenter Günther Jauch and the entrepreneurs Wolfgang Joop and Hasso Plattner.

Clara and Hermann Hoffbauer were carpet manufacturers. Their marriage remained childless and therefore they had lots of time and opportunities to undertake long travels. On one occasion in Africa they both became seriously ill. Their deep wish to be able to return to Germany healthy came true, and from then onwards they devoted themselves to charitable activities. They founded the Hoffbauer Trust.
Hosting on Potsdam’s most beautiful island since 1996...
When the Red Army retreated from Germany the most beautiful part of the island Hermannswerder – which served as military hospital since springtime in 1945 – was vacated and returned to the Hoffbauer Trust as its landlord.
Burkhard Scholz purchased a heritable building lease from the Hoffbauer Trust for the present parcel of land on which the INSELHOTEL is built and realized his dream of developing a 4-star hotel on the shores of Lake Templin. The laying of the foundation stone on 3rd. March 1995 was followed by the topping out ceremony on 21st June 1995 and the 10th May 1996 witnessed the opening of the INSELHOTEL. Since then we have welcomed guests from throughout Germany and around the world who emphasize the comfort of the hotel, the tourist attractions and natural beauty of Potsdam.
The extension of the INSELHOTEL with the congress and banquet centre „Bellevue“ opened in summer 2004, thus allowing for further options for your conferences and festivities.
